2016 Honda Odyssey vs 2016 Toyota Sienna seating

How do you choose which minivan is right for your family? The Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna are two of the most popular choices, and in many respects, they're both excellent. Both are available in either 7-passenger or 8-passenger seating configurations. Both have top-notch safety scores from the NHTSA. And, while driving dynamics and enjoyment aren't necessarily the top priority in a minivan, it should be said that both the Toyota Sienna and the Honda Odyssey offer some of the best. Both minivans handle very well for their size, and both are powered by similarly capable 3.5L V-6 engines. It's safe to say that the 2016 Honda Odyssey and the 2016 Toyota Sienna both have all the basics down.

The difference is in the details. The Odyssey is more convenient and family-friendly than the Sienna in lots of small but important ways. What sets an excellent minivan apart from merely a pretty good one? Let's find out.

What Makes a Minivan The Most Convenient?

Here's one important difference: the Honda Odyssey leads its class in fuel efficiency, getting up to 28 miles per gallon on the highway [1]. The Toyota Sienna's gas mileage is merely average.

The total amount of interior space is about the same in both minivans, but it's used differently: the Sienna has a bit more cargo space behind the third-row seat, but it sacrifices some passenger legroom to get it. The Odyssey's second-row and third-row seats have quite a bit more legroom. The Odyssey also has the distinction of being the only 2016 minivan that can fit 3 child car seats across the second row seat, with more usable LATCH anchor locations than the Sienna. High-end versions of both minivans include DVD or Blu-Ray entertainment systems for passengers, but only the Odyssey offers a built-in vacuum cleaner to clean the popcorn kernels out of the seats afterward.
